Wake Me Up Whe–Wait. It’s October?

Actually, for me, it’s ten til midnight. Still September. I’m here to give you the 411 on how my goals went.

Ok, well, I’ve been involved in Tuesday Tales (#TuesdayTales) every week since it began, so I’m exercising my skills, testing out what I can make happen in 100 words.

I got involved in 750words.com. For me, that was a mistake. To explain, the 750 words challenge is to write at least 750 words, using this particular site to track the words, the emotions, the weather while you’re writing whatever comes to you to clear your mind for the day. I call this morning pages. I cried every day for a bit while I wrote it. I don’t think that is supposed to be happening. But with me, it happens every time. But I made it through the entire month of September without quitting. Of course, I had plenty of computer and internet issues, so a lot of cutting and pasting had to be done, so my stats were kind of messed up, but I kept track of time, etc.
For me, not so awesome, but I definitely see how it can aid others in their paths. So if YOU have joined the challenge, congratulations! Keep at it! You can do it!!!

My Very Own Homemade Hell: The Personal Challenge
I challenged myself to write a novel in the month of August, something that would be better than a certain book I recently read. I had NO idea what I was getting into, with no thoughts on characters, story. I had no PEN or PENCIL, or PAPER. For the first time, this story was told straight from the fingertips, instead of the story changing from hand to head.

Ok. August got me some sketchy characters, and September has seen those characters flesh out just a little while filling in the blanks, establishing their place in this world, trying to make me care about them. (I’m not sure I’m there yet, but I threw in an alcoholic Latina named “Marisol,” so maybe she’ll get into some shenanigans.)

(Happy October! It’s midnight now, but I’m still tracking for August and September here.)

Ok, specifics for “August Romance”: Many scenes were written and then pieced together and placed just so. That means I wrote some of the beginning, middle AND end in August. In my head, it messes up the word count, but w/e.
20421–The total amount of words I wrote in the month of August.
5–Amount of chapters completed by the end of August.
6320–The amount of words contained in Chapters 1-5, including the header.
24-number of pages in Ch 1-5
79–total number of pages written
The first 5 chapters were assembled and connected by the end of August. \o/\o/\o/\o/\o/

In September, chapters 6-10 were completed. The first half of 11 is written, the second waiting for a pivotal scene. The first half of Chapters 12 & 13 is done, 15-19, and Ch 20 is in pieces.
101 pages.
And that’s it. It *should* just be 20 chapters. But that’s the FIRST draft, so…yeah…

26067–total amount of words in September, with some of the words from August being carried over.
24932–Amount of words in the previously mentioned chapters
So if my math is right, and it rarely is, that’s a total of 31252…at least, that’s what the computer is telling me.

I’m sorry. I’m tired. It didn’t hit that the end of the month was today, you know?

So, as a special treat, I will show you what I worked on a little for today. It’s the bare bones beginning of my character sketches. ///

I KNOW, right? YAY!!!

Oh, and bear in mind that this is pretty much stream of consciousness stuff here, this is just stuff I’ve learned so far.

Emma Marie Smith, 27
Blue eyed, honey brown/blonde hair. Tall enough to dance comfortably with Mark. She’s pretty much been on her own since the age of 3, when her father left/her mother kicked her father out of the house. Not long after, he died in a car accident, so she never got to see him again after he died. Then her mother mentally and emotionally abandoned her to the point that her baby survival instincts kicked in. She took care of her own needs as best she could until she was nearly five, when her mother’s body was discovered in the garage, the ignition still turned on. Had been that way for weeks. She screams when anyone tries to touch her. When she’s placed in Pre K or Kindergarten someone tries to touch her and she goes apeshit, causing a huge commotion, resulting in the need for homeschooling until she could be socialized.
When she was young and scared, she was taken from her home and put in her aunt’s home, with her cousin Casey, who she came to adore simply because Casey never asked anything of Emma. She never asked her to talk, to explain. Casey gave Emma one of her dolls, no questions asked. Emma trailed along with Casey and her BFF Mark, the kid who lived next door with a mom, a dad, and an older brother, Greg.
Emma didn’t like Mark. He was always picking on her, tormenting her, every chance he got, up until the time he went away for college. All that time, she felt as if he didn’t like her, so she felt less than she was, so she kept building her walls until she was clawing to get out. She lets Mark help her to find a way out. The therapy with Dr. Lainie Robison helped up to a certain point, but she needed some PHYSICAL therapy.

Emma works at a smallish bookstore. A small chain, perhaps, or a fake chain.
She doesn’t dress to impress. In her mind, there is no one to impress.
She is a virgin. She did have a bad experience with a guy Casey set her up with in high school. which was traumatic for her.
She’s claustrophobic, and as a result of her childhood trauma, she doesn’t like it when people touch her.

Mark–29
Dark hair, brown eyes. He’s a dancer. He’s a bit taller than most male dancers, but not by much. He’s got a lovely, muscled build without being gross.
He teaches ballroom dance at the Senior Center twice a month, in addition to the classes he teaches at a dance school he and some other dancers opened. He hires out as a choreographer, although he rarely performs himself (Possibly as a result of too many tours without a break?)
He saw a challenge when he met Emma as a young child. All he saw at first was a pretty child who didn’t adore him. Then she grew into a very awkward teenager who hated his guts. All he’d ever wanted was her attention, which he would only get if he was mean. By the time he realized that wasn’t the way to do it, it was too late. The behavior precedent had been set. He’d had no idea that he was causing Emma any sort of traumatic stress; he had no idea about her background.

Cassandra _____ Jennings, aka “Casey” 29 Doesn’t like to be called Cassandra. Emma’s older cousin, who has been best friends with Mark since they were 4, in a baby ballet class. Casey wasn’t a great dancer, so she made her wishes known at the age of 6 that she would no longer be taking those classes.
Dirty blonde hair (?) Green eyes (don’t want her to look like Emma)
Has a job. Mark’s brother Greg is her fella, and they are getting married. They’ve lived together long enough.

Gregory Paul _____ aka Greg. 31. He is still an unknown variable at this time. He is Mark’s older brother, and Casey’s fiance. I keep thinking of him as “Captain Awesome” from Chuck.

Dr. Lainie Robison is basically Lainie from Castle at this point. Short, but statuesque, sassy black lady who is as much of a friend type person as she is a therapist who Emma has been seeing for quite some time.

Ok. So that’s what I’VE been doing this past month or so. What’s going on with you?
